‘The Aorere Way is the way that we do things at Aorere College.’

The underlying philosophy of the Aorere Way is about developing a positive environment where staff, students and parents feel safe, welcome and respected.  It is about creating and maintaining a positive school culture.

The Aorere Way is interwoven across all aspects of life at Aorere College.  It is very much people focused and the expectation is that everyone treats each other with respect and dignity.  It involves everyone taking responsibility for the development of the positive school climate, including staff and students.  All staff, teaching and support staff, are required to model appropriate behaviour and attitudes.

All students must sign an Aorere Way Agreement when they enrol at Aorere College which clearly outlines what is expected of them whilst they are at the school.

The Aorere Way Committee is established each year and its brief is to ensure that a positive school culture is being maintained.  A staff member from each department is required to be on the Aorere Way Committee for that year.  Support staff and students are also encouraged to join.  Three meetings are held each term.

Many activities are held throughout the year to help with the development of a positive culture including:  Manners Weeks, Classroom Makeovers, Attendance awards, Staff morning teas, cultural weeks to celebrate the many different cultural groups in the school and many others.  AO Vouchers and Praise Postcards are also used to help encourage students in a positive way.

At Aorere College everyone treats others with respect and dignity by:
•  Avoiding put downs and verbal and physical abuse
•  Using good manners
•  Listening to others
•  Using polite language
•  Following the Classroom Behaviour Management Plan

At Aorere College everyone has the right to receive respect from others by:
•  Being treated politely and fairly
•  Being able to get the best possible education without being distracted or interrupted
•  Being free from discrimination and harassment

At Aorere College students have the responsibility to:
•  Attend all classes and be on time
•  Wear the correct uniform
•  Bring the correct equipment
•  Respect the environment and keep the grounds free from litter
•  Keep the College free from harmful substances
