Dinner at Novatel

Novatel is a hotel located by the airport in Auckland, New Zealand. They are a well known hotel and we are really grateful to be given this opportunity to meet and express our gratitude towards them and Ibis Hotel on Tuesday 2nd July. The other 5 students and I along with Mr Ali and Mr Pierce, went to Novatel for a formal dinner, with Mr Paul Columbus (CEO of Novatel), Ardi and Sven (from Ibis Hotel).

Before coming to this dinner, Mr Ali scared us all making it seem like we have to get everything perfect. However, the dinner turned out to be something that I did not expect. It was not as awkward as I thought it would be. Maybe it was because I was sitting next to Sven who made things less awkward. Throughout the night we got into many conversations such as all the Japanese phrases that we learnt, our future aspirations and getting to know everyone more. FOOD!!. Don't get me started on food. The food was amazing. It was also my first time eating Salmon. It was interesting. Even though things on the menu were foreign to me I really enjoyed the dishes that I chose.  Overall the night AND THE FOOD was incredible !!!

Thank you Novatel for inviting us for dinner as I am sure that we will always remember and cherish this night.
Without the help and support of Novatel and Ibis Hotel, this exchange would not be happening. I am very thankful towards Novatel and Ibis Hotel as we have been given an opportunity of a life time, to go to japan experience their culture and lifestyle along with sharing ours with them. I am sure that the other applicants and I will make the most of this opportunity given to us.

Once again
  Arigatougozaimasu Novatel and Ibis Hotel.

On Thursday 6th June, the 6 exchange applicants were officially introduced to the whole school. The interviews was one thing, but today we finally got to meet Novatel and Ibis hotel and thank them as successful applicants.

At first all the other applicants and I were shying away as soon as Mr Columbus walked through the reception doors. In that moment, many things were going through my mind.
 "What do I do?"
The first thing that I did was just smile and approach them by going up and shaking their hands. The awkwardness then slowly reduced as we began talking to them and eventually all our nerves faded away.

Going up to receive this scholarship by Mr Columbus made me feel really grateful and appreciative towards that him, Novatel and Ibis hotel, as they have done so much to be able to send us students to a foreign country. I am really grateful to be given this opportunity to travel to a foreign county and learn about a new culture. All of this is possible with the help and support of Novatel and Ibis hotel.

Thank you Novatel and Ibis for sponsoring us and giving us this opportunity to go and experience a new culture along with sharing our own with our sister school, Jishukan high school in Kanagawa Japan.

                  Once again
                    ありがとうございました (Arigatōgozaimashita)
                 Thank you

The preparation stage. Everything that is happening behind the scenes till the day we fly out.

Exchange prep
Along with our Japanese lessons, we also have exchange prep with Mr Ali preparing us for Japan. Every Thursday from 3:20 to 5:00pm.
During these lessons with Mr Ali, we have gotten to know more about our Buddies and more about Jishukan. During this exchange prep, the 6 applicants and I have been preparing a cultural performance to share with Jishukan. We were also told the agenda of our trip such as when we get there, what is happening and the places we would go to etc. During this time, the other recipients and I have bonded and gotten to know each other more.

Whanau meeting
We had our whanau meeting on Tuesday 22nd May. All the applicants and their families came to inquire more about the exchange process. The whanau meeting consisted of Mr Ali giving a presentation about our trip to inform our parent (so that they are aware and don't worry too much) including information about our flight, our itinerary and Jishukan. During this night, I got to meet and know all the other applicants parents and got to hear a lot about the exchange from an ex-applicant Gabby along with her family. Thank you Gabby for coming and giving us a bit of an insight on what to expect in Japan. At least now I kinda know what to expect when I get to Japan

  • Meet my buddy, Rie Oura. She is 17 years old and her birthday is on May 1st (My Birthday is on May 8th. We are both Taurus babies). Rei lives with her parents and her older brother. Her favorite sports is Tennis and she really like to play sports. The subjects that she takes in Jishukan is English, Science, Japanese, PE, and Math. I hope that we get along and make lots of new memories together both in Japan and New Zealand. I am really excited to meet her in person and get to know her more just like other applicant and their buddies.

  • See you soon Rie 👋

Only 4 weeks left!!!, till we fly out. Time is running out, preparations are becoming more intense. These preparation classes has made me more eager to fly out. However, I still feel nervous as the day go by yet excited at the same time.

Lessons

Every Friday of term 2, at 1:30 pm, the 6 exchange students have lessons learning the language of Japan. These lessons were led by our amazing teacher, Yumiko sensei. During these lessons, we learn how to speak Japanese, preparing ourselves before our departure to Japan. The first lesson started with basic introductions and greetings, where we learned how to introduce ourselves in Japanese. As we progress with our lessons, we go more in dept with the culture of Japan and the customs of Japan. In one of your lessons, we got to try Japanese food for the first time. Japanese food is more unique and different from the food that I have in my daily life. Because I am going to have it so often, I will be able to adapt to the Japanese culture through the new food that I try.

I am grateful to have a teacher like Yumiko sensei, who is willing to share and teach her culture with us.She is always prepared with slides and lessons as soon as we enter the class and always makes the lesson fun and easy to understand. Without Yumiko sensei, we would be really lost in Japan. I am now able to write my name and introduce myself in Japanese thanks to Yumiko sensei. I am excited to go to Japan and put my lessons to use.

ありがとうございました Yumiko sensei. ☺☺☺

We only have 6 weeks left before we fly out to Japan. Every part of my body gets excited as the days near. I mark off every day on the calendar as the days pass. The preparations for Japan are becoming more intense as we don't have much time left. I swear, if it weren't for my mum reminding me that I still have a whole month left, I would have already been packed and ready for the Japan.

😜😜😜

I Finally Made It !

I don't know where to begin.

Adrenaline and nervousness was coursing through me as Mr Ali was handing out the letters to every student. My mind was completely blank and me being me, was nervously tapping my feet non-stop. "Esha," is what I heard to bring me back to reality. This was happening. After the rigorous process of essays, group interviews and Individual interviews (with Novatel), The six students had gotten selected. Everything lied inside the letter that Mr Ali was giving out. In that letter, either two things written on it, Congratulations or Unfortunately. With the letter in one hand, the other was slowly ripping the seal from the envelope as I was dreading the answer that lied before me.

This was my exact emotions as soon as I opened my letter. I tried not to cry (because I was still at school. Instead I went home and cried), but the emotions were all too overwhelming. Once I opened that letter, I didn't know the exact emotion that I felt. The first word that I saw was Congratulations, and at that moment, I just wanted to cry. Relief washed over me as the panic faded and it took me a while to realise that I had been selected. I read congratulations, but for some reason, I had to read the whole letter to comprehend that I had gotten selected. After going through this rigorous process, I am really grateful to be picked and given this opportunity to go on this exchange. I hope to make lots of memories and experience a new culture during this exchange.
