Sweet Sixteen Choir

 

Such groups as the Sweet Sixteen choir continue a tradition of excellence in music at Aorere College. The choirs of Aorere College have consistently ranked in the top choirs in Auckland, representing Auckland at NZCF Big Sing Nationals in 1992, 94, 95, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 2007, 2008 and 2011.  In 2007, along with singing as the backup choir for the “Evermore” in their Auckland concert, the Sweet Sixteen were also awarded the NZCF Youth Ambassadors Trophy for the choir which most presented themselves as role models for other choirs.  In 2008 and 2011 the Sweet Sixteen were awarded the NZCF Maori Performance award for the finest performance of a work in Te Reo Maori.  In 2009 the Sweet Sixteen were featured on the 60 Minutes programme “Feel the Spirit.” In 2011 the Sweet Sixteen and Front Row choirs were featured in the TV1 programme “Road to the Big Sing.”  In 2011, the Sweet Sixteen also sang in the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup.  The Aorere music department has produced many notable musicians, including students of music at various universities throughout the world and present members of the Tower Voices New Zealand, the Tower NZ Youth Choir, and the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir.
