About Us

Student Head Librarian Amilaina Leafa

With a total of 16,660 books plus 1496 newly ordered books, the new Aorere College library has been one of the biggest events in the school’s history. The past few years showed increasing numbers in the school roll, which also meant the library was in full use throughout the year. The new library was well on its way and date of completion was set. Due to some construction problems, this date had to be pushed back which gave us student librarians and staff complications.

‘THE BIG MOVE’
Knees bending, back straight, lifting boxes was one of the challenges faced by our librarians, library staff, caretakers and a tractor to move our school library. Camping in B Block Open area has been very challenging, from organising books and for students. But it was our call, our duty to provide the best service possible for the school.

‘THE TEAM’
Each day has its way. Each day has its team leader. Each team leader has their team. Each team has jobs, obstacles, challenges, but also solutions. The library is run by Mrs Rolinson, who is our motherly figure, followed by two wonderful staff librarians: Ms Wang & Ms Broadbent. Nicholas is new on our librarian staff this year helping out in various areas. Sadly Ms Torrence is dearly missed by us student librarians because of her soft hearted grace towards us, as she has retired now but will always be remembered in AO history.

2011 AND BEYOND!
The Aorere College Library, now known as The John Lander Literacy Centre has been in full use, admired and appreciated by the students of Aorere College. It’s been a wonderful journey from, “I cant’ wait!” to, “WOW!” Just like the lady who chose the designs, the library has been enhanced with interior of white walls, lime green furniture mixed with charcoal. It looks stunning, giving it a more modern look and how a library should look. Oh, and don’t forget the palm trees! The library has taken learning experiences on an exciting journey and enabled students to engage more with studies. It has also given us Y13 leavers a memento to remember for years to come.
