Music - 10MUS - Year 10

This is a music course of study for students who wish to develop their practical and academic music skills in preparation for possible future study at senior levels. Students will learn music reading, writing, description and comparison and will be expected to reach a level of skill equivalent to Grade 2 of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). In practical music, students will be expected to study an instrument with a school tutor and/or a private tutor and to reach a performance level at least equivalent to Grade 2 of the Royal Schools of Music (performance). Participation in a college musical group is required. Level 1 credits are available for students reaching the required standard.

Music – MUS101 - Year 11

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a music course for pupils who wish to develop their practical and academic music skills further. Students will develop their aural, composition, solo and group performance skills, and will learn about fundamental material of music and some music works. Music students are expected to be in a college instrumental ensemble e.g. college choir, concert band, stage band.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Completion of full Year 10 Music programme or HOD discretion. This course is not suitable for beginners. Performance experience on an instrument (may include voice) is necessary; students should have been learning an instrument for two years or can prove equivalence to the HOD, e.g. ABRSM Grade 2 practical.

Counts towards NCEA Level 1; according to level of ability shown, some students may be offered qualifications beyond Level 1, and ABRSM grade theory and practical examinations as appropriate.

Music – MUS201 - Year 12

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course builds on the Level 1 music course and is for students who wish to develop their practical and academic music skills further. Students will develop their aural, composition, solo and group performance skills, and will learn about fundamental material of music, instrumentation, recording and some music works. Music students are expected to be in a college instrumental ensemble e.g. college choir, concert band, stage band.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

8 Level 1 Music credits. Performance experience on an instrument (may include voice) is necessary; in general, pupils should have been learning an instrument for THREE years (or can prove equivalence - e.g. ABRSM Grade 4 or 5 practical).

Music – MUS301 - Year 13

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course builds on the Level 2 music course and is for students who wish to develop their practical and academic music skills further. Students will develop their aural, composition, solo and group performance skills, and will learn about material of music, arranging, recording and some music works. Students will be expected to show a high degree of music leadership within the musical life of the school, a high degree of independence and personal responsibility in learning, and a high degree of practical proficiency on an instrument (or instruments). Students are expected to join a college musical ensemble.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

8 Level 2 Music credits. Performance proficiency at a high level on an instrument (may include voice) is necessary (normally ABRSM Grade 5+ equivalence).

Tertiary study; a number of other applications in the music industry
