Support Network

Student Services Centre

Aorere College is committed to providing a quality education for each student.

Aorere College has a comprehensive range of services to support students academically, physically and emotionally.  These include:

A Tutor for every class.  Students meet with their Tutor each morning.

Two Deans at Years 9, 10 and 11; One Dean at both Years 12 and 13.  The Dean supports the Tutors, places the students in their Tutor Group and classes and provides pastoral support and guidance for students and their families.

An experienced, qualified Guidance Counsellor heads a team which is available to provide support and Guidance for students and their families/Whanau who are experiencing issues that impact on their well being and learning.  This team consists of two qualified Counsellors, two full time experienced Social Workers, several Counsellors-In-Training who work part time in the school under the direction of the Guidance Counsellor, and a team of workers from Odyssey House visit the school once a week to support students who have had issues with alcohol and other substances. A Police Constable is available under the Cops In Schools programme to provide legal advice to students, monitor Road Safety in the area and to assist with other activities (Sports Days, promoting the work of the Police) as necessary.

The Social Workers work with students and families to improve attendance and participation in class. They work with individual students and, where appropriate, groups of students who are experiencing similar issues. They liaise with families/Whanau and agencies in the community which can provide extra support.

Two full time Registered Nurses run the Health Centre (open from 8 30 am to 3.30 pm).  They deal with illnesses and injuries that arise during the school day and are available to support students and families /Whanau to access other medical services as necessary. The Nurses carry out a holistic Health Assessment for every Year 9 student to identify any health needs and   support families/Whanau to access appropriate services to assist students. A specialist Nurse from Family Planning visits the school once a week. Students are able to access the service of a Physiotherapist who visits twice a week. Specialist Nurses visit the school to support students as required.

Aorere College’s SENCO supports students and staff where students have learning or behavioural needs which impact on their ability to participate in classes.  The SENCO liaises with parents and agencies in the community to maximise students’ opportunities to benefit from their time at school, or to assist families to find appropriate post school education for students.

The Counsellor liaises with and is supported by a number of agencies in the community, e.g. Child Youth and Family and Whirinaki.
