Aorere College students - globally connected contributors now, and in the future
Digital Device Policy
As new technologies continue to change the world in which we live, they also provide many new and positive educational benefits for classroom instruction.
To encourage this growth, students at Aorere College are required to bring their own digital device(s) to school.
Definition of "Technology"
In the Aorere College context, "Technology" means privately owned wireless and/or portable electronic handheld equipment that includes portable internet devices (e.g.laptops, netbooks, tablets/slates and smartphones) that can be used for word processing, wireless internet access, image capture/recording, sound recording and information-transmitting or receiving/storing, etc.
Internet
The school Wi-Fi network may be accessed by any Aorere College student while at school. Personal or school-owned digital devices are not permitted to be used to access web-based internet material during class time unless explicit permission is given by the teacher.
Security and Damages
Responsibility to keep any digital device(s) secure rests with the individual owner. Aorere College (or any of its staff member), is not liable for any personal digital device stolen or damaged at school.
If a device is stolen or damaged, it will be handled through the same pastoral protocols similar to other personal property. It is recommended that skins (decals) and other custom touches are used to physically distinguish student devices devices from others. The school also offers free device engraving (strongly recommended). Additionally, protective cases for technology are encouraged, as is personal equipment insurance. All device devices should be pin and/or password protected. No individually-owned digital device at Aorere College should have open log-on or “guest” access enabled.
At the end of any lesson regardless of digital technology use, the teacher must ensure that all students check their bags and that they have all their belongings (including digital devices). If any device is found to be missing, the teacher must immediately send a student for the year level dean or, if not available, a SLT member. The class is not to be dismissed under any circumstances until this check has been completed.
In PE, Dance & Drama & Technology classes (or in any class where students are away from their bags), all personal property (including digital devices) should be given to the relevant teacher for safe storage. The student owner is to be the only person who collects their personal property from the teacher at the end of the period. Once again, the class is not to be dismissed until all students have had an opportunity to check that they have all their personal belongings including their digital device(s).
The MAC address and the serial number of all digital devices should also be recorded and archived by both parent and student.
Aorere College Digital Devices & Cybersafety Student Agreement
