Parting Stage Reviews
MANGERE ARTS CENTRE SEASON
Parting Stage- what an experience
Having just returned home after enjoying the Aorere College Film Academy's production Parting Stage, I am still buzzing from the experience. It was probably the best school performance I have ever seen, and certainly the greatest student-led production. It was brave, challenging, original, inventive, creative and stunning. The way it integrated all the elements of the arts was seamless and dynamic. The energy and expertise of the artists in all areas of the creative process and technical design deserve high praise and recognition. In particular, Muzaffar must be commended for his brilliant leadership, and the writers, Kaylene and Joegen for their talent in both creation and performance. And the talent goes deeper, from the actors, dance crews, musicians, singers, post-production technicians and stage crew. Bravo to all who collaborated on this marvellous extravaganza. What brilliant futures you are creating for yourselves.

Awesome!
Parting Stage was the best amateur performance I have seen but it was actually professionally done in all aspects. Reflected Aorere College brilliantly and the uniqueness of both our staff and students. Awesome!

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!
Absolutely spectacular and touching is how I describe this film production Parting Stage. You have done yourselves, your families and Aorere proud. I was amazed on how these students integrated film, reality drama, dance and music together creating a live cinema. It gave me goosebumps, laughter different emotions how this film was portrayed. I can't get over how awesome the reality and film was introduced to us, all the way through the show. All I can say to my son Joegen Daniels and all the other talented students involved is, Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Muzaffar congratulations for a great live cinema, Parting Stage.

We need more stories and truly raw productions like this.
This is incredible. My son is wanting to enter the arts and now I understand what he must be going through. Thank you for expressing your ideas and thoughts and really letting us oldies know what is going on with you guys. What I am taking away from this experience is a better understanding of the arts and how I must help my son reach his potential. We need more stories and truly raw productions like this. Keep up the good work!

Hope there is another one.
I enjoyed it so much. It was a great experience. The mix of film and theatre was amazing. I liked how most of it was true and that is what goes through a young person's mind. The dance and music were beautiful. Hope there is another one. Great effort too.

The actors/students put in a lot of feeling and emotion, plus time, effort and energy.
Really good acting.
How everything moulded together perfectly.
Songs fit into the scenes they were played in.

I cannot believe this has been put together by high school students
This has truly been such an extraordinary experience and I cannot believe this has been put together by high school students. This kind of multi media concept I have only seen in my lifetime one other time and that was in Singapore done by professionals. Well done on a brilliant achievement! Will come back for more.

Unique concept
Unique concept - good execution. Krump + contemporary dance sets were well choreographed + performed. The effects/graphic design of the opening was exeptional. Some camerawork not steady enough - dizzy effect. Text conversation was smartly done. Transitions between segments was efficient. Sometimes too little time spent building the scene. Some unclear conflict resolution re: David + Riley.

I was able to connect with it emotionally
Thank you so much for this amazing production. I bought my 12 year old daughter to today's show and as parent's you never truly know what is happening in their minds. Parting Stage has really opened my mind and I was able to connect with it emotionally. I hope my daughter from watching this takes away some of the lessons here and finds confidence in sharing her thoughts with me. You all are very talented. I thank you for Parting Stage.

What an amaaaaaazing show.....Last nyt my husband and I went to watch our lil cuzn Kaylene Tewake and her film crew from Aorere College perform a live film I was left in awe, amazement, speechless I have no words really to express how talented you all are. Just wonder how you'll go beyond this next year.
I was blown away with the scale of the production, the story, the acting/dancing and the initiative taken to explore a uniquely creative form of entertainmentI just wonder how you'll be able to go beyond this next year. From the humble beginnings of the first Film Academy, to the massive production you produced. So amazed at everyone involved. Favourite moment? Hard to choose, there were so many great moments. But it was the dance sequence shown to represent the fight they had to protect Riley.

A Huge Kudos
We couldn’t stop acknowledging the unique and original features we have seen from last night’s presentation. There were so many production facets that were carefully crafted and definitely beyond amateur quality: the artistic graphics and script, the natural acting, the moving musical renditions, the seamless interpretative moves of the dancers and the silent contribution of all crew behind the curtains are unquestionably worthy of utmost recognition. You all have embodied the dynamic spirit of the Aorere community. Thank you so much for this unique, wonderful and very memorable opportunity. Our sincerest congratulations!

In AWE!!! Such a well thought out live theater production. Brilliant work. Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect from the story line, characters/actors, dancers/dancing, singing, screenplay, graphic design, song choice, even the credits and bloopers :) Did not expect it to be of this caliber. My Son was one of the dancers, and I can not be more proud of him :) Favourite moment....The Whole show...but most of all witnessing how much talent these students have, including the students behind the scenes. As a parent, feeling proud not just of my Son but for each and every one of the cast and crew. I wish them all well for the future, keep it up!! Would love to see more :) Awesome AO

An absolutely overwhelming success
One of the best productions I have seen for a long time...an integration of film, live theatre, dance and music. The students of Aorere College Film Academy produced this independently...an absolutely overwhelming success...the fruits of a mass of hard work and raw talent. We love you Kaylene Tewake...not just because of your multiple talents, but because of who you are - I saw lots of you in the character of Riley...she rocked...and you rock! Love you babe...

The story was written so well, very hard to believe it was done by students
Awesome, I have never experienced anything like it and didn't know what to expect, I was totally blown away. The students at Aorere are so talented, and the live stage performance was able to portray your gifts by incorporating all the different types of performing arts and mediums in one show - amazing. All the work that was put in by the students and the staff was over and above exceptional. You worked really hard on the production and it paid off. I went on Friday and Saturday.I could it watch the show over and over again. that's how much I enjoyed the experience. All of them were my favourite moments, to incorporate film, live performances, dancing, music and vocals like WOW. The show is so inspirational, it makes you really think about the consequences of those unfavourable split second decisions and how they can shape your future. The story was written so well, very hard to believe that it was done by students. I really think you should take the show on the road. Looking forward to seeing the next stage, the second stage, the third stage and the final stage. Proud of you all the staff and students. Pursue your dreams, follow your passion and reach for the stars … I believe in you all. Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei (Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain). This whakatauki is about aiming high for what is truly valuable, it's real message is to be persistent and don't let obstacles stop you from reaching your goal.

It will move you
Although it has been a few months now since I watched Parting Stage, the memory and pleasure of experiencing it still holds strong. Parting Stage is the story of Riley, with whom the audience is asked to identify. It is the story of a young girl, from South Auckland; a truant and rebel who believes in the truth of making things happen. Hers is a story that cannot help to be present in our collective Auckland-consciousness, in stark newspaper headlines and grim TV banners. We have seen her story before, but not in these humanising terms. Aorere College’s Parting Stage takes Riley’s pain, love, fears and joys, and translates them into a melting pot production of theatre, film, dance and song.
The depth and intellect of Parting Stage comes from its permission for and indeed encouragement of personal interpretation. Riley’s story is far removed from North Auckland, East Auckland, West Auckland childhoods - many of our childhoods - yet it transcends those differences. It is a story that means whatever it means to you. Much of this is achieved by the movement back and forth between the different medias. A scene is acted on stage. Riley and her friends will play out some conflict. The scene might be interpreted in any number of ways: let the choreography and music of the dance sequence that follows guide your intuition to the interpretation that resonates with you.
Something that has not yet been mentioned: this is an entirely original script; entirely original choreography. It is directed by students; performed by students. It is students who press the buttons for the music and lighting. It is students who organise props and equipment behind the curtains. Teachers are present, but this production belongs to students. That authenticity is felt in the performances.
Parting Stage is unlike anything I have seen before. It will move you. You will forget you are watching a school production. Allow yourself to be carried with it - and give credit where credit is due. This is the creation of Kaylene Te Wake and Joegen Daniels - well done to those two.

Absolutely loved it. The different uses of media to capture the essence of Drama. Loved the multimedia complexity. Lead role Kaylene “Riley” was amazing. Dancing was great. Singing/live music helped to portray the emotion.
- Tanya Kimiangatau, Ngatia Vaike & Kelly Peterson

Great use of different media…
Excellent! Great use of different media (film, live acting, dance…). Good story and characters with depth. My only complaint is that some sections are a little loud. Adjust the levels a little. Also remove the word brother from Riley’s first line. It sounds forced.

Dancing was flippin’ amazing
10’s across the board. Good execution of ideas. Articulation of the dialogue was weak. Dancing was flippin’ amazing. Good use of space. Sometimes the huge crowds of people blocked the audience.
